About AKAP

Real-world experience and practical knowledge means client focused, cost-effective, and strategic solutions.

I have 20 years of experience as a civil litigation lawyer.  My practice includes insurance coverage and tort litigation in cases involving personal injury, property damages, and other complex liability exposures.  Throughout my career, I've represented insurers and insureds in litigation and coverage matters in applications, trials, and appeals in Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Yukon, and Northwest Territories.

Before establishing my own practice, I was a partner in a Western Canadian law firm with offices throughout Alberta and British Columbia.  I practiced as a litigator in the firm's Insurance Department with a focus on insurance coverage matters, from file inception to the appellate level.

I have a passion and commitment  to teaching, learning, and fostering knowledge about the law.  It was a privilege to teach Insurance Law as a Sessional Lecturer at the University of Alberta Law School in Edmonton.  I continue to teach law at a post-secondary institution in Calgary.  I've also written extensively on insurance coverage matters and have been published in the Canadian Journal of Insurance Law.

Before being called to the bar, I worked at as an analyst at the Department of Justice Canada, Canada Border Services Agency's Investigations Directorate, and also in the Senate of Canada.

I began my legal studies at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, one of the world's oldest and most prestigious universities, where I earned a Bachelor of Laws (Honours).  I then attended the University of Nottingham in England, where I earned a Master of Laws in International Commercial Law, which included a concentration in the law of marine insurance.  I returned to Canada and completed Canadian equivalency studies at the University of Manitoba.

Thorough,
Clear,
Precise.

My approach is to first ensure that the factual "big picture" is understood before â€‹drilling into the critical details.  Coverage assessments are founded upon a thorough and progressive analysis, which follows the very same approach applied by Canadian courts.

Coverage opinions, reservation of rights correspondence, and Court materials are written clearly, and with precision.

Representative Work

I've conducted trials before the Alberta Court of King’s Bench, Ontario’s Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Justice.

I've also conducted applications, motions and appeals in courts throughout Alberta, Ontario and Manitoba.
